In the UK, if you are an employer or you control premises that contain water systems, you are responsible for managing and maintaining that water system, ensuring it complies to water safety standards.
Water systems should be regularly tested in order to maintain the necessary hygiene standards. After a risk assessment of your water system has taken place, it's likely that some remedial actions may be necessary to bring your cold-water storage tanks up to compliance.
Whilst this may sound like a tough job, don't panic. Replacing a failing tank is often the last resort. Relining or repairing storage tanks can be the better option and means reusing your existing tank by applying a lining to the internal surfaces. In this blog, we take a look at the options available to you if you can't replace a tank and the reasons why you should reline a tank instead of replacing it.
With extensive experience in the tank repair and relining market, and with hundreds of projects completed, Titan Mechanical Services can offer cost-effective options for every situation. From our very own range of solvent-free - polyurethanes, that come with a 10-year guarantee, to butyl liners, two pack epoxy coatings, and fibreglass lining and repairs.
Our polyurethane lining is considered our premier offering. This specialist WRAS approved coating prevents future corrosion and offers fantastic chemical resistance. After your tank has been cleaned and inspected, specialist machinery and tools are used to remove debris and scale from the tank walls, before the walls are dried and painted to form a smooth, tough finish that will protect against bacteria such as Legionella. Once this is completed, water fills the tank and normal activity is resumed.
The time taken to reline a water tank is often quicker than replacing an existing water storage system, with some structures being fully refurbished within 48 hours. A hot or cold-water tank replacement can take much longer and you'll also need to consider whether your premises can go without running water supplies as any tank replacement work will require you to shut off the water level for a prolonged period. Depending on the size of the water tank and the chosen application, the entire relining process can be completed very quickly.
While many people believe that replacing the cold-water tank is the most beneficial option in preventing future leaks, removing a cold-water tank can be very time-consuming and expensive. A common example are those tanks installed when a building is first constructed, making removal very difficult, if not impossible. In addition to this, it's now very common for Glass Reinforced Plastic tanks - which are only guaranteed for 12 months - being installed due to their relatively low cost and ease of installation. However poorly built GRP tanks are very susceptible to leaks. Every year, we are called out to undertake emergency relines on leaking GRP tanks.
Tank refurbishments are therefore increasingly seen as a much cheaper and equally successful option. At Titan Mechanical, we offer a 10-year guarantee when relining tanks using our solvent free polyurethanes, so ask yourself whether you want to take on the worry and expense of replacement or would a reline with a 10-year guarantee be more hassle-free?
When large items such as water tanks are replaced it's important to think about the long-term impact this will have on the environment when they are disposed of. Here at Titan, we work to repair water tanks wherever we can, thereby increasing their lifespan and reducing the environmental impact.
