Steel Water Tank Replacement Bristol
Steel Water Tank Replacement at a School in the South West
Project Brief
A primary school in Bristol required urgent replacement of an ageing steel sectional water tank. The existing unit, located on the roof inside a small tank room, had poor access on all sides - the tank filled nearly the entire room, making maintenance almost impossible. Over time, the steel panels had begun to corrode internally, creating both water hygiene risks and compliance concerns. The tank was also massively oversized for the system it fed, causing significant water hygiene risks.
Due to the cramped conditions, there was no viable way to carry out internal repairs or relining. A full tank replacement was the only realistic option. However, getting the old steel panels off the roof posed another challenge. The school had no internal access route suitable for safe transport of heavy, sharp-edged materials, meaning the removal would require specialist lifting equipment.
Solution
To carry out the works safely, cleanly and with minimal disruption to school operations, we followed a carefully planned approach. Our full turnkey service included:
-
Careful Decommissioning: The old steel tank was cut up and removed piece by piece, using specialist cutting tools to dismantle it inside the tank room.
-
Full Waste Disposal Plan: A telehandler was used to lift the dismantled steel sections down, avoiding the need to transport heavy debris through the building.
-
Future Proofing the Installation with Safe Access: New flooring was installed to provide a solid base for the new tank and safe walkways around it for future inspections and maintenance.
-
Supply & Installation of Fully Compliant GRP Tank: A 4,000-litre GRP sectional tank was then installed and commissioned into service, meeting all current compliance and water hygiene standards.
-
Minimal Disruption: Project completed during the school holidays, ensuring zero disruption to students or staff.
Key Benefits Delivered
-
Compliance Restored: A fully compliant, corrosion-resistant GRP water tank ready for long-term service, appropriately sized for the system it is feeding, avoiding future water hygiene issues caused by stagnation.
-
Safe Decommissioning: Safe and efficient removal of the old steel tank using appropriate lifting and cutting equipment.
-
Future Proofing: New, accessible walkways around the tank makes future maintenance far easier and safer.
-
No Downtime: No disruption to school activities due to smart planning and holiday scheduling.
