Potable water tanks (also known as drinking water tanks) are water storage tanks used to hold drinking water. This type of tank is usually found in older buildings or buildings that do not have access to a regular water system for a variety of reasons. Potable water tanks can also be present as a back-up water supply to prevent facilities from being without water, such as in healthcare facilities.
If you rely on a tank for your drinking water it should meet the following requirements:
Your potable tank should not be too large, so the water in the tank is frequently replenished with fresh water and not stagnant.
Your tank should also be made of the correct materials.
Your potable water tank should have a tightly fitting lid which protects the water from light and debris.
A potable water tank should be correctly vented
Visual checks should be carried out to look for signs of Legionella risk. The main visual signs of Legionella risks include; a build-up of slime and other microbiological activity, rusting and general disrepair.
When water is stored incorrectly it can become contaminated with bacteria and other contaminants. Your maintenance regime or Legionella Risk Assessment may identify that your potable water tank poses a risk of contamination. As potable water tanks hold water that will be consumed by employees and visitors to your facility, it is important that you protect them from exposure to Legionella and other waterborne organisms. The water in your potable tank can become contaminated from the water source, whilst being stored, during transit, or due to backflow from other water systems.
