Booster Set & Main Conversion at a School in the Midlands

Project Brief

A school in Nottingham had been struggling for years with poor mains water pressure, particularly affecting critical equipment located on the roof of the main building. Despite numerous attempts to resolve the issue, previous contractors had recommended complete system replacement - a costly and highly disruptive approach. The school’s leadership reached out to Titan Mechanical Services in search of a more intelligent and cost-effective solution. Our engineers carried out a detailed system survey and proposed a targeted upgrade that would resolve the pressure issue without the need to replace the existing hot water system.

Solution

Our full turnkey proposal included:

  • Holiday Installation Schedule: To avoid interfering with term-time operations, the project was planned and delivered during school holidays. This ensured our engineers had unrestricted access while maintaining the school’s normal schedule.

  • New Tank and Booster Set Installation: A new 1,800L two-piece GRP break tank was installed in a ground floor storeroom. This was paired with a high-performance Efaflu QDrive booster set, comprising three Efaflu BMVET 4-8 variable speed inverter-driven pumps, suction and discharge manifolds with isolation valves, a stainless steel base plate, 200L pressure vessel, and dedicated control panel.

  • System Integration and Upgrades: All pipework was connected to the new booster system and linked via a bypass into the existing mains supply. The team then cleaned and disinfected the tank and pump set, checked for leaks, and ensured stable operation.

  • Adapting the Existing Calorifier System: Rather than replace the hot water system, our engineers adapted it to accommodate the increased pressure. This involved installing an unvented kit incorporating a PRV, TRV, PrRV, and a 24L flow-through expansion vessel. All associated pipework was insulated with foil-backed lagging, disinfected, pressure-tested, and signed off.

  • Specialist System Design: The success of the project relied on accurate pump specification and careful integration with legacy systems. All work was completed in line with ACOP L8 and modern plumbing standards, ensuring long-term compliance and reliability.

Key Benefits Delivered

  • No Disruption: All works were completed during school holidays, meaning there was zero interference with daily operations or classroom use.

  • Full Turnkey Service: Titan managed the entire project from design to commissioning. All water services were back online and performing as expected by the end of the holiday period.

  • Pressure Problem Solved: The root cause of the long-standing issue was fully resolved - without the need to replace the existing hot water system. The school saved thousands by avoiding unnecessary demolition and reinstatement works.
