How To Replace a Water Tank

Listen Better. Plan Better. Build Better.

The Tank Replacement Process

When a water tank is badly corroded, structurally unsound, or no longer fit for purpose, replacement may be the safest and most practical option. If repairs or relining won’t restore integrity, a new tank ensures long-term reliability and compliance. Whether it’s supplying drinking water, feeding a hot system, or supporting a critical process, we can remove and replace tanks of any size with minimal disruption to your operations.

At Titan, we carry out water tank replacements across all types of buildings and industries. Every job is carefully planned to meet site constraints, downtime limits, and water quality standards. Below, we explain the key steps in a typical replacement – including what to expect, what we’ll need access to, and how we keep your system running smoothly.

1. Survey and Project Planning

Every replacement project starts with a thorough site assessment. We inspect the existing tank, take detailed measurements, and identify any access limitations, compliance risks, or structural challenges. Based on this, we develop a bespoke project plan—specifying the new tank type, installation method, and any preparatory works required to ensure a safe, efficient and durable upgrade.

2. Temporary Tank or Bypass (If Needed)

To keep your water system live while the tank is being replaced, we can install a temporary storage tank or configure a bypass on the existing system. This ensures continuous supply during the works and avoids downtime for building users or critical systems. Everything is arranged ahead of time, so when we arrive on site, the switchover is seamless and disruption-free. See how this worked in practice in our recent project: GRP Water Tank Replacement Case Study | Titan Mechanical Services.

3. Drain Down and Disconnect

With the temporary supply active (if required), we isolate the tank, drain any remaining water, and disconnect all associated pipework, valves and fittings. This includes isolating electrics or control gear where applicable. The aim is to leave the tank safely decommissioned and ready for removal.

4. Dismantle and Remove the Old Tank

We take down the existing tank in sections, using manual or mechanical methods depending on access and material. All waste is handled responsibly and disposed of in line with environmental regulations. Care is taken to avoid damage to surrounding plant or finishes during removal.

5. Prepare the Base and Supports

Before installing the new tank, we inspect and prepare the base. This could include cleaning, re-levelling, or fitting new supports and upstands. A solid, level foundation is essential to ensure correct load distribution and long-term stability.

6. Install the New Tank

We deliver and build the new tank on site, whether it’s sectional GRP, one-piece or two piece units. Every component is assembled in line with the manufacturer’s guidelines and site constraints. If space is tight, we adjust our approach to suit.

7. Reconnect Pipework and Valves

Once the tank structure is complete, we reconnect all inlet, outlet, overflow and drain connections. New valves, strainers or pipework insulation can be added at this stage if needed. All fittings are carefully aligned and pressure-tested to prevent future leaks or stress on joints.

8. Refill, Disinfect and Leak Test

With the new tank installed and sealed, we refill it gradually while monitoring for leaks. We then carry out a full disinfection using approved methods, typically chlorination, to ensure the system is safe for use. The tank is now ready for final sign-off.

9. Commissioning and Removal of Temporary Supply

Once the new tank has passed all final inspections and tests, we reconnect it fully to the system and restore normal operation. If a temporary supply was in place, we dismantle and remove it with minimal fuss. The result is a brand new, fully compliant tank installed to modern standards - ready to serve reliably for years to come.
