What Are The Different Types Of Hot Water Systems?
The most common types of hot water systems are tankless water heaters, gas hot water systems, electric hot water systems, solar hot water systems, and heat pump hot water systems.
What's The Difference Between Vented and Unvented Hot Water Systems?
Vented systems have a separate tank in the loft to store hot water, and the water is heated by a separate heating system, such as a boiler. The hot water tank is vented to the atmosphere to allow air to enter and escape as the water is used and refilled.
Whereas, unvented systems store hot water in a cylinder, typically located in an airing cupboard, and rely on mains pressure to supply hot water to the taps and showers.
An unvented system does not require a separate tank in the loft and does not vent to the atmosphere, meaning that the hot water is stored at mains pressure.

What Is Tank Lining?
Tank lining is a restorative process designed to extend the life of existing water storage tanks. Instead of replacing a deteriorating tank, lining involves applying a new, protective coating to the interior surfaces. This method addresses issues like corrosion, leaks, and bacterial contamination, restoring the tank's integrity and functionality.
The lining process typically includes:
-
Inspection and Assessment: Evaluating the tank's condition to determine suitability for relining.
-
Surface Preparation: Cleaning and preparing the interior surfaces to ensure optimal adhesion of the new lining.
-
Application of Coating: Applying a specialised lining material, such as polyurethane, to create a seamless, protective barrier.
-
Curing and Testing: Allowing the lining to cure properly and conducting tests to ensure the tank meets safety and performance standards.
Lining a tank with polyurethane is often more cost-effective and less disruptive than full tank replacement. It minimises downtime and extends the tank's service life, making it a practical choice for facilities aiming to maintain water quality and compliance with health & safety regulations. What Types of Tanks Can Be Relined?
Relining is a versatile solution applicable to various tank types and materials.
Commonly relined tanks include:
-
Concrete Tanks: Often used in industrial settings, these can develop cracks over time. Relining seals these imperfections, preventing leaks and contamination.
-
Steel Tanks: Prone to corrosion, especially in older installations. A new lining protects against rust and extends the tank's lifespan.
-
Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) Tanks: While resistant to corrosion, GRP tanks can suffer from delamination or structural issues. Relining reinforces the internal surfaces.
-
Sectional Panel Tanks: Whether it's steel sectional tanks or GRP sectional tanks, these structures suffer from joint leaks and panel degradation.
-
Cooling Towers and Fire Sprinkler Tanks: Specialised applications where relining ensures operational efficiency and compliance with safety standards.

10 Benefits of Relining Your Cold Water Tank
1. Cost-Effective Alternative to Replacement
Relining a water tank is often significantly more affordable than a full replacement. It eliminates the expenses associated with purchasing a new tank, dismantling the old one, and the potential structural modifications required for installation.
2. Minimised Downtime and Disruption
The relining process is typically quicker than replacing a tank, leading to reduced operational downtime. In many cases, relining can be completed within a few days, ensuring that water services are restored promptly.
3. Extended Lifespan of Existing Infrastructure
By addressing issues like corrosion and leaks, relining can significantly prolong the service life of existing tanks, often adding 10 to 15 years of usability.
4. Enhanced Water Quality and Safety
A new lining acts as a barrier against contaminants, preventing issues like rust, biofilm, and bacterial growth, thereby ensuring the stored water remains clean and safe.
5. Improved Resistance to Corrosion and Chemicals
Modern relining materials offer excellent resistance to corrosion and chemical attacks, protecting the tank's structural integrity and ensuring compliance with safety standards.
6. Compliance with Health and Safety Regulations
Relined tanks can be brought up to current health and safety standards, including those related to potable water storage, ensuring compliance with regulations such as Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 and ACOP L8.
7. Eco-Friendly Solution
Relining reduces the need for new materials and the disposal of old tanks, making it a more sustainable choice that lessens environmental impact.
9. Seamless Finish for Easier Maintenance
A relined tank often features a smooth, seamless interior surface, which not only prevents bacterial growth but also simplifies cleaning and maintenance routines.
10. Long-Term Guarantees for Peace of Mind
Many relining services come with substantial guarantees, often up to 10 years, providing long term peace of mind as to the quality and durability of the work performed.
